Rock n Roll Highway Singer Ricky Warwick and DJ Ralph McLean go on a musical odyssey into rock'n'roll history to trace the Ulster-Scots heartbeat at the core of the biggest cultural revolution of the 20th century. Listen closely to the primitive rhythm that powers early rock and R&B and you can clearly hear the Strathspey and even the Reel, which had used backbeats since they were introduced to the South by Ulster-Scots in the 18th and early 19th centuries. That accent on the offbeat rather than the complicated syncopated rhythms favoured by jazz informed the growth of everything from Bluegrass to Country, Rockabilly and the birth of what came to be called rock. You can hear it in I Walk The Line, I'll Fly Away and That's Alright Mama. All seminal songs in the development of American roots music and all rooted deep in the dirt of the Ulster-Scots experience. Producer: David Kilpatrick Director: Paul McGuigan
